MY GEAR
Some people ask my about my gear and what I use to shoot. I respond by telling them that for many types of photography it doesn't matter; any type of gear can be used to make compositionally and aesthetically pleasing shots. However, gear does matter for professionals in genres like sports, wildlife, astrophotography, and weddings, where better specs are essential to the quality of photos.

Here are just some of the cameras, lenses, and other stuff I use...
Main camera: Nikon D5100 (DSLR)
This was my grandpa’s camera. This is the camera that really got me into photography: it started with my trip to Peru during the summer of 2022. I took this camera with me, and that is really where I learned the basic skills of photography, like how to use the exposure triangle. It’s a pretty old camera and is good for beginners. I plan on upgrading my main camera to a newer, more modern mirrorless camera soon. (Maybe Sony Alpha??) The D5100 came with a Nikon Nikkor AF-S DX 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6G kit lens. Main lens: Nikon Nikkor AF-S DX 18-200mm f/3.5-5.6G IF-ED VR This was a superzoom lens I bought for my D5100 for sports photography. I’ve used this lens at every single one of my school’s track meets, and although it’s a pretty old lens, the large focal length and reliable autofocus rarely fails me. This lens allows me to capture the shot I want, at any distance. |
Sony Cyber-Shot DSC-H55
This was a smaller point-and-shoot camera that belonged to my grandpa. I’ve been using this camera a lot lately, because it is an older camera with a CCD sensor. It has a nice dynamic range and good colors, and I’ve taken with me on many trips when I didn’t have the space available for a larger camera in my carry-on luggage. |
Canon PowerShot SD1000 (IXUS 70)
This is a small point-and-shoot camera which as gone up in popularity in the recent years. As a result, the price has also shot up. I bought mine for $60 from the secondhand market, but they can be seen online for as much as $200. The reason for the increase in popularity is the new digicam trend - the older CCD sensors inside these sensors capture colors similar to film cameras, while being less expensive and easier to use. |
Peak Design Capture Camera Clip V3
If I had to choose one camera accessory to use for the rest of my life, it would be the Capture clip. This has been an indispensable tool for me. Instead of needing a camera sling or strap, I can just slip it in and out of this clip on my backpack strap, and it has allows me to quickly access my camera and get the shot. |
